Cambodia's Pioneering Role in Tackling Climate Change within the Construction Sector Recognized Globally

Phnom Penh, March 12, 2024: The Ministry of Environment disclosed yesterday that Cambodia's proactive stance in combatting climate change impacts within the construction sector has garnered international acclaim. This announcement follows the conclusion of the World Forum on Construction and Climate Change, convened last week in France, co-hosted by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the French Ministry of Ecological Transition.

At the forum, Dr. Eang Sophalleth, the Minister of Environment, presented Cambodia's comprehensive strategy to mitigate climate change effects in construction. The nation has initiated several pivotal measures, including the adoption and enforcement of the National Air Conditioning Action Plan, formulation of climate-resilient construction and infrastructure standards, and initiatives to bolster public awareness and capacity for climate policy execution.

Moreover, Cambodia is advancing urban housing land use planning with a keen focus on climate adaptation for vulnerable communities. Concurrently, the country is securing timely climate financing to bolster both adaptation and mitigation efforts, underscoring its unwavering dedication to sustainable construction practices.

Dr. Sophalleth emphasized the indispensable role of the construction industry in combatting climate change, advocating for global collaboration to realize a sustainable and resilient future. He reiterated Cambodia's adherence to the principles of the Declaration DE CHAILLOT, affirming the nation's commitment to fostering sustainable prosperity for future generations through diplomatic channels.

Cambodia's proactive measures epitomize a significant stride towards harmonizing environmental sustainability with economic development, serving as a beacon for global endeavors in positioning the construction industry as a frontline ally in the battle against climate change.
